HP Photosmart C6280: power how-to
Background
I own an HP Photosmart C6280. I can't say it's a bad printer. Can't say it's a good printer either. Overall, it doesn't perform too bad. The ink replacement system, that six-pack of ink recharges (HP 02) is scandalously inefficient, so that after several years of use, I have multiple duplicates of unused colors, and a giant stack of photo paper. But even that blatant customer abuse is hardly relevant.
Really, I would not even mention it if, some time ago, the printer hadn't suddenly
woken up with a sad error 0xc18a0201 and hadn't just refused to keep
cooperating. This had happened at a time my wife needed to print, of course, so I
ended up having to STFW in a hurry.
At the time, however, a Web search came up empty and I had to call HP for support. I have a vague recollection of navigating the usual maze of customer reps, finally ending up talking to an heavily-accented, less-useless-than-most, rep who guided me through arcane steps to access the hidden system menu on my printer.
He had me reset the errors, reboot, and voila! The printer was back to acting as new! I quickly forgot all about the whole story until…
… Until of course the issue occurred again, no more than two weeks ago! This time, I knew what I was looking for: how to access the sekret menu, reset the hardware errors, and get back on my way. Still, the search was, again, too long.
This is why I have decide to publish this how-to so as to hopefully increase its visibility.
